Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Sao Paulo in Brazil, to denounce the riots and the storming of key government buildings by former ultra-right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro.

Youth, labour union activists, and anti-racism advocates were among those protesting in the Brazilian capital. The counter-protests follow Bolsonaro’s rioting supporters that ransacked the presidential palace, Supreme Court, and the Congress.

In response, Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva vowed to crack down on those who stormed Congress. More than 300 people have been arrested so far.

Observers compared the riots to that of the January 6th 2021 riots at the US Capitol building by Donald Trump supporters.
