Government is not in a position to create further full-time employment for people.

Wits University Business School’s Professor Jannie Roussow says the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme has helped young people get their first job, but the major benefits of the programme won’t be seen immediately.

He was speaking as Phase 2 of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme has kicked off. It comes after the first phase was announced last year as a response to the economic challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

National Treasury had allocated R11 billion for the programme, which will support the continuation of some Phase 1 programmes as well as new projects. This includes recruiting of 287 000 young people.
