Ben Friedman Plein could be renamed Strand to the Strand Muslim Community Square

Public comment is open for the renaming of Ben Friedman Square in Strand to the Strand Muslim Community Square.

The renaming is meant to honour the rich heritage of the Muslim community in that area, which celebrated its 200th anniversary last year.

The square is anchored by three community mosques.

The proposal to rename comes as the country is preparing to mark the Day of Reconciliation, especially as the Group Areas Act under Apartheid forced Muslims and people of colour from Strand.
