Two corrupt police officers stationed in Bellville have been sentenced to a fine of R30 000 or three years in jail.

The pair had extorted R4000 from a man who they accused of being indecent with a teenager. The 16-year-old was in his car on Voortrekker Road during the police’s shakedown. They threatened to splash his picture across social media if they didn’t not get the money. The officers, Steven Jacobs and Denzil Abrahams also stole six drum microphones from the man’s boot.

The man reported the incident to police who set up a sting operation where they were caught.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, advocate Nicolette Bell has welcomed the sentence, saying it’s unacceptable for those entrusted with fighting extortion to be the very same people who are involved in such crimes.
