A 40-year-old man has been killed following a prolonged armed standoff and exchange of gunfire with police at a farm in De Hoop, Robertson, in the Western Cape.
The incident began on Sunday evening after police received a complaint that a man had allegedly fired shots at a neighbour’s vehicle.
The situation subsequently escalated into an extended gun battle, continuing into Monday evening and prompting the deployment of the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Special Task Force (STF).
According to Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa, local police and members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) came under fire before the Special Task Force was called to the scene as a last resort.
The special forces were deployed on Monday afternoon, where they came under heavy gunfire from the suspect. An armoured Nyala police vehicle was damaged during the exchange.
Potelwa says STF members tactically gained entry to the house, where the suspect was shot and killed during an exchange of fire.
Two women who were in a neighbouring house were also safely rescued during the operation.
Police seized an assault rifle, shotgun, two pistols, magazines and various types of ammunition from the scene. Flags and notebooks containing inscriptions were also recovered.
One police officer was injured during the incident.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) was called to the scene, while an inquest docket has been opened for further investigation.
The Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, commended the police officers involved in bringing the standoff to an end.
Dimpane particularly praised members of the Robertson Police Station, who were first to respond to the initial complaint and subsequently came under fire, as well as TRT members who provided reinforcement before the situation was escalated to the STF.
“Our members demonstrated courage, discipline and tactical restraint in confronting an armed individual who posed a direct and serious threat to police officers and innocent members of the community,” said Dimpane.
She said the incident highlighted the need to ensure that police officers have appropriate tactical support when confronted by heavily armed individuals.
Dimpane also emphasised that the safety of civilians must remain central to police operations, while urging communities to report threats, illegal firearms and suspicious activities to police.
She wished the injured police official a speedy recovery and reaffirmed SAPS’s commitment to protecting both its members and the communities they serve.
