From the villages of the Eastern Cape to international stages, Dumza Maswana’s journey is a celebration of African music, heritage and storytelling.
On this episode of Review of the Arts, we welcome Dumza Maswana, acclaimed South African singer, songwriter and radio presenter, known for his rich baritone voice and distinctive fusion of African musical traditions, spirituality and jazz.
Born and raised in Ngqushwa in the Eastern Cape, Dumza’s love for music began with the influence of his grandmother, who introduced him to singing and storytelling. From forming the gospel group Healing Voices at just 17 to building a career that has taken him onto international stages, his journey reflects passion, perseverance and a commitment to preserving African musical identity.
We explore the experiences and influences that shaped his sound, his achievements in the South African music industry and the stories behind his music.
We also look ahead to his upcoming Umngqungqo Orchestral Experience, taking place at Artscape in Cape Town on 31 October 2026, where music, orchestral arrangements and African storytelling come together.
Join us for an inspiring conversation about music, identity, cultural heritage and the power of storytelling through song.
Discover the man behind the voice and the journey that continues to shape one of South Africa’s distinctive musical storytellers.
