Gift of the Givers is warning the public about scammers using the organisation’s name to financially exploit people.
The aid organisation says scammers are posing as its staff and requesting personal or banking details in exchange for promised food parcels. Other scams involve fake letters and payslips used to solicit money, secure loans or falsely claim tenders worth more than one-million-rand.
The organisation has also warned about fake prize notifications offering cash, airtime, vouchers or appliances, with victims asked to purchase a voucher before receiving their supposed prize.
Gift of the Givers says it is aware of one person who reportedly lost six-thousand-rand in a scam.
Anyone who has fallen victim is urged to report the matter at their nearest police station and keep all communications and other evidence that could assist with investigations.
