18-year sentence for gang-linked Muizenberg taxi shooting

The Wynberg Regional Court has sentenced Bjorn Davids to 18 years’ direct imprisonment for murder and attempted murder in Muizenberg. Davids was convicted of murdering a 29-year-old taxi driver and attempting to murder a passenger who was wounded in the attack in November 2022.

The court heard that tensions existed between members of a taxi association and Davids’ gang at the time. The victim was transporting passengers from Wynberg when he stopped at a stop sign in Vygrond Avenue. It was there that Davids allegedly opened fire on the vehicle. The driver sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene. One passenger was injured during the shooting but survived.

Davids was arrested shortly after the shooting and remained in custody throughout the trial. The court sentenced him to 15 years for murder and 10 years for attempted murder. Seven years of the attempted murder sentence will run concurrently with the murder sentence.
