This December, Wheel to Heal and Masjid Love will bring together a group of cyclists for an incredible 500-kilometre journey from Makkah to Madinah. The challenge aims to raise vital funds for financially vulnerable masajid, helping support and sustain these important community spaces.The Hijri Cycle Tour, a joint initiative between Wheel to Heal and Masjid Love, officially launch on Friday, 11 September, at the Academia Library Atrium.
The tour will bring together 30 cyclists and a one-hand cyclist, who will leave Cape Town on 9 December and perform Umrah before beginning the four-day cycling journey on 12 December.
The cyclists are expected to cover between 85 and 150 kilometres per day, before spending approximately three days in Madinah and returning to Cape Town on 20 December.
The journey draws inspiration from the Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah to Madinah, with organisers describing the ride as a physical expression of faith, sacrifice, perseverance, and service.
Rather than raising funds for once-off assistance, the campaign aims to establish a sustainable waqf through the acquisition of an income-generating asset. The revenue generated will provide ongoing financial support to masajid and the communities they serve.
For organisers the goal is to ensure that masajid can continue providing essential services, including salaah, Qur’an education and community support.
The Hijri Cycle Tour is more than a journey from one holy city to another; it aims to leave behind a legacy of sustainable support for communities in need.
