A new 11-member board has been elected to oversee the affairs of the Mowbray Muslim Cemetery following a three-day election in which 53 candidates contested for positions on the board.
The newly elected members are Faizal Sayed, Shameemah Salie, Mogamat Ameen Schroeder, Riad Fataar, Yusuf Khan Dalwai, Muhammed West, Ayub Mohamed, Yaseen George, Mohamed Majedi Bassier, Faizel Bassier and Muhammad Aadil Bassier.
The elections were overseen by an Independent Panel chaired by attorney Igshaan Higgins, which has congratulated the newly elected board members on their appointment. The panel also expressed its hope that Allah grants the new board wisdom, integrity, unity and strength as they take on the responsibility of serving the community and managing the affairs of the Muslim cemetery.
One of the newly elected members, Faizal Sayed, has thanked the community for placing their faith in the new board. He said the level of participation in the election demonstrated the community’s strong interest in the cemetery and the important role it plays. Sayed is among the 11 members elected to the Mowbray Muslim Cemetery Board following a court-ordered election. The election was held after the Cape High Court found that the previous board’s composition and constitution were unlawful.
Sayed said the election comes at a time of significant reform in Cape Town’s burial sector, adding that the new Mowbray Muslim Cemetery Board would play a role in these developments.
He said the strong community participation in the election was encouraging and reflected the importance of the cemetery to the Muslim community.
The newly elected board now faces the task of strengthening governance, serving the community and ensuring that the affairs of the cemetery are managed with integrity and in the interests of those who rely on it.
