A couple accused of defrauding non-profit organisation, Sanzaf, of more than R170,000 is expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
The pair, aged 41 and 48, were arrested by members of the Hawks on charges of fraud.
Hawks Western Cape spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi says that the couple allegedly received funding intended to support Islamic studies and Qur’aan memorisation programmes for underprivileged youth. According to Vukubi, applications for financial assistance were submitted to Sanzaf, between 2018 and 2020.
However, authorities say that the couple had used the funds for their personal travelling expenses.
Meanwhile, Sanzaf has refuted claims that the suspects had served as directors at the institution. Sanzaf CEO, Yasmina Francke, says that all applications for funding goes through extensive vetting:
“In this matter, the application received went through the relevant internal assessment processes and supporting records are maintained. SANZAF continues to serve the community with transparency, accountability and care in the responsible administration of Zakah, Sadaqah and other entrusted funds. We urge the public not to share unverified information that may cause confusion or reputational harm.” – Sanzaf CEO, Yasmina Francke.
