Majority of the people slapped with a fine for violating the Disaster Management Act regulations in the Western Cape – are for breaking the curfew. According to police about three-quarters of the more than 2 900 fines issued since New Year’s Eve are for failing to confine to their place of residence between 9 pm and 6 am.

Just over 30 people were arrested for the sale, dispensing and distribution of alcohol. Almost 30 illegal shebeens were shut down and 11 000 litres of alcohol confiscated.

At least 13 firearms and a hundred rounds of ammunition were also seized. Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says they recorded fewer crime incidents during this period as lockdown regulations were in effect.0 She further notes that these operations which form part of their Festive Season programme will continue until the end of the holiday season.
