UNISA’s first female Vice Chancellor in 148 years

The University of South Africa (UNISA) will for the first time in its 148 years be led by a female Principal and Vice Chancellor. Professor Puleng LenkaBula will assume the position as of January 1st. She will replace Professor Mandla Makhanya but he will remain in the post until April to ensure a smooth transition.

 The UNISA council approved LenkaBula’s appointment following a rigorous selection process. LenkaBula who has extensive managerial experience in higher education is the Vice Rector of Institutional Change, Student Affairs and Community Engagement at the University of the Free State.

Chairperson of the UNISA Council, Sakhi Simelane says the appointment of LenkaBula is further testimony of the commitment to the transformation project it introduced and drove relentlessly in the university over the years.
