At least 38 Western Cape schools have been affected by burglary and vandalism over the holiday period.

Schools lost sports, gardening and maintenance equipment, lighting and electrical cables, computers, stationery, kitchen equipment, and food supplies. The cost of the damages and replacement of stolen items is estimated to cost R 10 million.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says in some cases, criminals didn’t steal anything but destroyed infrastructure. The public has been urged to report any vandalism or strange activities at schools to the police.
