3008 arrested in WC crackdown on crime

Just over 3000 suspects have been nabbed in the police’s week-long high-density operations in the Western Cape.

They were detained for a range of crimes including murder, attempted murder, assault, business robbery, and the illegal possession of firearms.

According to police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, operation Shanela focuses on combatting crime by addressing the generators of serious and violent crime such as alcohol, drugs, and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Some 8000 rounds of ammunition were confiscated and more than 190 dangerous weapons. Drugs were also seized including over 1300 mandrax tablets, heroine and ecstasy.
