The 2021 local government elections have been declared free and fair. IEC Chairperson Glen Mashinini expressed his satisfaction with the overall conditions of the elections.

Delivering the national results, Mashinini admitted that this election under its conditions presented its fair share of challenges, but the conditions for free and fair elections were met. The Electoral Commission received and cleared 290 objections following investigations and deliberations.

Out of the 213 councils nationally, the ANC achieved a majority in 161 municipalities, the DA 13, and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) 10 municipalities. Sixty-six councils failed to achieve a majority, classifying them as hung councils.

Locally, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has retained its majority in the City of Cape Town with 58.22 percent. The ANC in second place with 18.63 percent and the EFF with 4.13 percent.
