Western Cape social workers are investigating the alleged abuse of a 10-month-old baby who has been hospitalised with two broken legs.

The provincial Social Development MEC Wendy Kaizer-Philander, who visited the Saldanha Bay baby in hospital, says the infant’s older sibling has been removed from the family and placed in temporary safe care. A criminal case has also been opened with police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the injuries.

During the 2025/26 financial year, the department received some 6 700 reports of various forms of child abuse and neglect.

The department says most reports were in the deliberate neglect category, followed by sexual abuse and physical abuse. Kaizer-Philander has issued a stern warning to those who believe they can harm a defenceless child.

She says her department will use every lawful means at its disposal to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes are held to account and face the full might of the law.

The MEC also reminded members of the public that protecting children is a shared responsibility and is not only the responsibility of government.
