The Revenue Services (Sars) has been given a cash injection as part of efforts to boost its effectiveness in collecting more revenue.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced that it will receive an additional R7.5 billion over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).
He believes this money could lead to SARS collecting billions. There has been a growing view if collection measures at SARS are tighten it will drastically aid the country’s public purse.
There is also hope that SARS will address the issue of illicit financial flows strongly as this poses a significant threat to the country.
At least R3 billion will be allocated for this financial year to ensure the orderly withdrawal of South African troops from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
It’s a jump from the initially proposed R1.8 billion. In his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana indicated that this is in light of the phased withdrawal.
He says the budget is being reduced as a result.
