The five daily salaah

1st prayer

Fajr

The dawn prayer. Its window opens at true dawn and closes at sunrise.

Not a salaah

2nd prayer

Zuhr

The midday prayer, beginning once the sun has passed its highest point.

3rd prayer

Asr

The afternoon prayer, running until shortly before sunset.

4th prayer

Maghrib

The sunset prayer, beginning just after the sun has set.

5th prayer

Isha

The night prayer, beginning once the twilight has disappeared.

How these times are calculated

The times above are calculated for the city of Cape Town using the Muslim World League convention, with a Fajr angle of 18° and an Isha angle of 17°. Asr is calculated according to the Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali method, which is the position followed by most of the Cape Town Muslim community. Under the Hanafi method, Asr falls later in the afternoon.

Please confirm jamaah times with your local masjid. These are calculated times for the Cape Town city bowl. Masaajid across the Cape Peninsula, the Cape Flats and the northern suburbs often set their jamaah a few minutes after the entry of the time, and some follow a locally published timetable.

Ramadan and Eid

During Ramadan, the Fajr time above marks the end of sehri and the Maghrib time marks iftar. Radio 786 carries moon sighting announcements and Eid coverage as they happen — keep the station on, or follow our news coverage.
