Cape Town gathers for moon sighting ahead of Eid

In Cape Town, the tradition of moon sighting for Eid remains a deeply rooted and communal practice, especially among the local Muslim community.

On the evening before Eid al-Fitr, Muslims gather along the coast (three anchor bay) or at elevated viewpoints such as Signal Hill to look for the new crescent moon marking the start of the new Islamic month.

The sighting is often confirmed by religious authorities, whose announcement traditionally is broadcast over radio and now widely shared on social media – officially declares the beginning of Eid. This practice blends religious devotion with a strong sense of local identity, as families and communities come together in anticipation, preserving a heritage that has been passed down through generations in Cape Town.

Eid will be marked on Saturday 21st March in Cape Town, South Africa.
