Groote Schuur Hospital has opened its improved Emergency and Trauma Centre, following a R200 million investment by the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness.
The upgraded facility, which is already operational, will be officially launched on 6 October 2026. The Emergency Centre began operating from the new facility on 28 July, while the Trauma Centre commenced operations on 12 August.
The centre features modern clinical infrastructure, advanced medical technology, dedicated trauma treatment areas and improved resuscitation facilities aimed at strengthening emergency and trauma care.
The project also received support from philanthropic donors through the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust, which funded equipment including mobile digital X-ray units, ventilators, ultrasound machines and transport monitors.
Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger said the investment would strengthen the hospital’s ability to respond to emergencies. “Groote Schuur’s Emergency Centre is one of the busiest in Africa, treating between 3 500 and 4 500 patients every month,” Wenger said. She added that the investment is about ensuring patients receive quality and compassionate emergency care when they need it most.
The upgraded centre also includes dedicated waiting areas for families and relatives, as well as a new Patient Liaison Officer to assist families with information and communication during emergency admissions. Dr Shaheem de Vries, CEO of Groote Schuur Hospital, said the development reflects the hospital’s commitment to patient-centred care. “The opening of the improved Emergency and Trauma Centre is a landmark achievement for Groote Schuur Hospital and the communities we serve,” he said.
The hospital says the new centre represents an investment not only in healthcare infrastructure, but also in improving the experience of patients, families and healthcare workers.
