“Your freedom is temporary.” That’s the warning the Deputy National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, has sent to those behind the killing of five women in the Kempton Park area in Gauteng. She says both SAPS and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) have the capability, resources and determination to find these criminals.
Since July, the bodies of five women have been found within the same vicinity of each other. They were found half-naked with visible bruising. The latest victim, believed to be in her 30s, was found yesterday morning on the side of the road in Olifantsfontein. It’s the third body discovered within the space of one week. Mosikili says one suspect has already been arrested in connection with the first case. She says the suspect has been positively linked to the murder. Authorities are still trying to identify three of the bodies.
Now, the attacks on women in Kempton Park have again exposed the dangers females are confronted with in South Africa and the failure of society and the State to protect its mothers and daughters. They cannot go for a run, take a walk, or go for a hike or to the shopping mall without needing to think of their safety.
