The Western Cape Education Department has warned teachers and jobseekers about an ongoing scam offering fake teaching posts. The department says scammers are using WhatsApp messages while posing as district officials or school principals. Victims are told that a permanent teaching position is available at a specific school.
They are then asked to pay fees of up to R2,000 to secure the job. The WCED says it first became aware of the scam last year and has repeatedly warned educators to stay vigilant.
Scammers may use the names and photographs of real principals or education officials to appear credible. Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond says the WCED never charges fees for job applications or appointments. She says all permanent teaching posts are advertised through official recruitment processes.
