Shamila Sulayman: Breaking Barriers in Rugby & Empowering Women in Sport

This afternoon on Up Close & Personal, we meet Shamila Sulayman, a pioneering leader whose journey through education, sport, community development, and rugby has helped create new opportunities for women and young people in South Africa.

Shamila has spent almost two decades serving Western Province Rugby, first through its Transformation Committee and General Council before making history in 2017 as the first woman elected to its Executive Committee. In 2025, she became the Union’s first female Vice President.

Her leadership journey also includes Collegians Rugby Football Club, where she became its first female president in 2021. Her contribution to women and girls in sport was recognised when she received the 2022 Gsport Volunteer of the Year Award.

But beyond the titles and milestones is a story of family, perseverance, service, and a commitment to creating opportunities for others.

In this conversation, Shamila reflects on her childhood and upbringing, her love of sport, her experiences as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated sporting environment, and the people who shaped her journey. She also discusses her work with young people, community development, access to sports facilities, and her vision for greater equality in sport.
