South Africa does not have a definition for heritage. This criticism from curator at the Iziko Museum, Lynn Abrahams, comes as the country prepares to mark Heritage Day. She contends that the complexity of heritage and culture in South Africa is being diminished by attempts to pigeon-hole the different communities in this country. She says that the accepted narratives, marginalisation, and un-remembering that have been fostered in South Africa, have shaped the country’s understanding of heritage. Abrahams says that reducing it to a “Braai Day” is an insult to the rich history of this country.
