The Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the deep-seated inequalities in various societies across the world. A similar situation now seems to be playing out with the vaccines.
According to the People’s Vaccine Alliance – a network made up of charities – rich countries have hoarded enough doses to vaccinate their entire populations nearly three times over, leaving about 70 poor countries with only enough to vaccinate one in10 people.
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Director John Nkengasong says the continent might not see vaccines until after the second quarter of this year. They are struggling with the Covax facility which is linked to the World Health Organisation and was established to ensure equitable access to the vaccines.
He has urged the UN to hold a special session to discuss the ethical and fair distribution of vaccines saying it is a moral issue.
