Global Perspectives International events are of primary importance in this programme. Issues affecting the oppressed in countries like Kashmir, Bosnia, Occupied Palestine, America, Sudan etc. are addressed in detail. News round-ups (short news-like reports of events taking place in different parts of the world), focus programmes (detailed discussions and packaged features on a specific issue) and interviews are particular elements of this programme. Prime Talk Academics and experts in their field and people with their fingers on the pulse of matters local, national and international discuss in depth current concerns and issues affecting the community. Africa Today Africa is teeming with ideas and developments, yet it is not reported. Africa Today is a specialist feature devoted to news and happenings on the African continent. The programme considers the positive developments across Africa, while also bringing listeners sounds from the diverse communities of Africa. Africa Today is broadcast twice Monday – Friday
RELIGIOUS, THEOLOGICAL & DEVOTIONAL Radio 786 primarily serves the broadcasting needs of the Muslim community. A wide variety of programmes are of a religious, theological and devotional nature. The Call to the five daily prayers, religious education, melodious recitation of the Qur’an, theological debates, Arabic literacy and the coverage of events in the Muslim community are the salient features of these programmes.

Focus on Shariah A set group of Islamic scholars discuss and enlighten listeners on Islamic law and the reasoning behind those tenets. Listeners are often also allowed the opportunity to call in and pose questions on relevant topics. Focus on Shariah is broadcast Monday to Thursday
Nidaa-un-Ilal-Ilm wal-Hilm (A Call to Knowledge and Character Building) The programme brings together a diverse range of scholars representative of various schools of thought who deal with Islamic issues and place them in a current context, whether related to the family or community, etc. Nidaa-un-Ilal-Ilm wal-Hilm often features youth and visiting scholars. Muwajahat (Confrontations) True to its name, Muwajahat confronts the issues others would rather have swept under the carpet. The programme features recognised scholars both locally and internationally who discuss or debate topical/controversial issues. Listeners are also afforded the chance to pose questions to the guests during the phone-in component of the programme. Muwajahat is broadcast alternate Sundays (60 minutes in length)
EDUCATION, HEALTH & WELFARE Tiny Tot Time This programme is directed at those under-12 years of age (pre-school and primary school). The programme takes a magazine format and includes story-telling, children reciting from the Qur’an, the singing of nursery rhymes, competitions for children, learning about Islam, etc.
The programme is particularly popular as nursery schools are allowed to bring their learners to the studio to present the programme. Tiny Tot Time also often visits pre-schools to conduct live outside broadcasts from the said venues. Tiny Tot Time is broadcast Monday to Sunday (25 minutes in length)
Youthopia The programme is produced and presented by a team of youth ranging from 15 to 24 years of age. It takes a magazine format and features debates, sports, motivational poetry and anecdotes, world music and information and youth events. Youthopia is broadcast twice a week (35-45 minutes in length)
Matric Revision Programme The Matric Revision Programme offers Matric learners tuition, advice on the subjects they are studying in their final year of schooling and also helps prepare them for the Matric examination. Programmes are presented by subject advisors and examiners who often are involved in setting up the Matric’s final examination papers. The Matric Revision Programme is broadcast when required - at least thrice a week (45 minutes in length)
Health-Wise This programme spans a wide range of health issues ranging from mental health, medical health, through to dietary habits and conveys alternative healing therapies which promote a healthy lifestyle. Specialist and knowledgeable people in their field of health are interviewed by the resident host of the programme. They also provide advice on growing vegetables and herbs to ensure cost-effective living. Health-Wise is broadcast twice a month (45 minutes in length)
Medical Health File Presented in conjunction with the Islamic Medical Association (the largest group of Muslim medical practitioners in South Africa), the programme discusses health ailments and conditions prevalent within the community Radio 786 serves. It also, nonetheless, focuses on rare illnesses. Listeners are allowed to call-in and converse with the specialists for advice or guidance regarding their conditions. Medical Health File is broadcast twice a month (60 minutes in length)
Women’s Forum Women’s Forum is directed at issues affecting women. The programme is designed to reflect on the diverse roles women play in society, for example, women as -mothers , -parents, -in the workforce, -achievements and their contribution to society, -role in society from an Islamic perspective, etc. The primary objective of Women’s Forum is to empower, educate and uplift women. As a result of its highly educative nature, Women’s Forum is an extremely popular programme attracting a broad listenership. Listeners frequently request rebroadcasts of programmes. This programme has run virtually since the inception of Radio 786. Women’s Forum is broadcast Monday to Friday and certain programmes are rebroadcast over the weekend (60 minutes in length).
Methods of Survival This programme is geared towards the adult listener and highlights social matters and concerns affecting both communities and individuals. Relevant issues such as rape, violence, abuse, relationships, marriage, living with largely chronic illnesses and book reviews amongst others; are covered. With its proactive bi-line of ‘guiding you to healthy long term and positive’ relationships’, the programme aims to create awareness of the topic within the larger communities, while bringing about an ethos of positivism and providing solutions. Aside from its presenter, the programme has a co-host-cum resident social worker; who lectures at UWC and has over 30 years experience in the field, offering practical advice, information and opinion on all matters addressed. Guests from various institutions and organizations also feature in the slot. The programme is aired every broadcasting weekday and its duration is an hour
Family Matters The family unit is an integral part of society, yet within families, complications and conflicts do arise. Family Matters provides advice and guidance on everyday issues in the home. The programme features a resident scholar with decades of experience on family related matters. Owing his age and state of health, Family Matters is recorded on-site at the guest’s home. Family Matters is broadcast twice a month (50 minutes)
Table Talk A spin-off of Family Matters, Table Talk allows listeners to call in and seek clarity or guidance on matters relating to the family. The resident guest entertains questions from all members of the family, youth, mothers and fathers and tries to explain solutions to problems taking all perspectives into consideration. Table Talk, importantly is broadcast at a time when the family is together after prayers on a Friday afternoon. Table Talk is broadcast on Friday (60 minutes in length)
Ervaringe Oor die Jare This programme explores the lives and life experiences of people in our community. The programme is produced with the participation of the Cape Family Research Centre and discusses significant events in the history of the peoples of the Cape. Elderly guests often feature on the programme to share their life’s experiences. The programme’s objective is to leave listeners with messages/guides as a way of resolving issues in their own lives. And those of their families. Because of its empathetic nature and because it deals with the very real problems of people, it enjoys a large following. ‘Ervaringe Oor die Jare’ is broadcast every Sunday (60 minutes in length)
Breaking the Shackles from Within Breaking the Shackles from Within facilitate contact between prisoners and their families and grants them the opportunity to convey messages to each other via the radio. Prisoners often use the programme to also express their concern for their loved ones, which they may not have been able to do face-to-face. The programme is also interspersed with motivational sayings and guidance. Breaking the Shackles from Within is broadcast twice a month (45 minutes in length)
COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES The Muslim community is a vibrant one with more than 130 Mosques throughout the Western Cape and several hundred Muslim community organisations in the region. These organisations cover the entire spectrum of Muslim social life from burial societies, libraries, sports clubs, bursary societies through to educational structures. Radio 786 has a large number of programmes which provide information about the social events taking place in the community:
Community Calendar This is a diary of events taking place in the community. Organisations furnish Radio 786 with notices of future events which are announced regularly on this programme. Community Calendar is broadcast Monday to Sunday at least twice a day (10-20 minutes in length).
In Touch In-depth information of organisations is a salient feature of this In Touch programme. This involves promoting the events, functions and celebration programmes of organizations. This programme receives innumerable requests from organisations to appear on it. In Touch is broadcast Monday to Sunday (or as required) at least twice a day (15-20 minutes in length).
Organisation Profiles There are hundreds of community organisations in the Western Cape whether it be sports clubs, educational structures, welfare services or burial societies, etc. The objective with Organisational Profiles is threefold: a) to introduce listeners to a wide range of organisations and services in the community, b) to discuss the work of and the nature of the services of such community organisations and, c) to provide the contact details of the organisations. Radio 786 has profiled more than 300 organisations to date. The Organisation Profile programme is broadcast as required (20-30 minutes in length).
Outside Broadcasts (OB) Many organisations have weekend (fundraising) activities such as sports days, food fairs, family fun days, eat & treats, etc. Radio 786 is frequently requested to broadcast live from these events to popularise the events and attract the community. Radio 786 has OBs of this nature practically every weekend. OB’s also include the coverage of events such as book launches, graduation and awards ceremonies, lectures and talks by international guests, Quranic recitation programmes, etc. Outside Broadcasts coverage typically lasts between 1 - 3 hours
REQUESTS & MESSAGES / PHONE-INS Radio 786 has a variety of phone-in programmes in which listeners can send their "requests and messages" to fellow listeners. These messages include; birthday greetings, get well, Hajj (pilgrimage) departures and arrivals, (celebration of) Eid greetings, marriage anniversaries and so forth. The Just For You programme is broadcast Monday to Sunday at least twice a day (30-45 minutes in length). Hospital Hour / Hospitaal Uur is broadcast every Saturday and Sunday (60 minutes in length).
Programmes of this nature seek to encourage people in the local community to explore their talents and to consider the radio as a medium of expression for such talent.
LITERATURE & THE ARTS Review of the Arts The programme aims to highlight the contributions from artists, authors and playwrights within the previously marginalised communities. It has offered many a poet and author the opportunity to break into the competitive world of arts. A spin-off of the programme is the active promotion of reading within the community through book-reading sessions and other such activities. Review of the Arts is broadcast every Sunday (45 minutes in length)
Echoes of the Soul The programme exposes listeners to music from just about every corner of the world. From Africa to China, Indonesia, Turkey or Azerbaijan, Echoes of the Soul makes meaning through music. Interspersed between the music are news stories and accounts of the regions from which the music originates. Echoes of the Soul is broadcast twice a month (45 minutes in length)
Sangeet ka Safar Owing to the popularity of music from the Indo-Pak subcontinent, Sangeet ka Saffar caters for such tastes, bringing listeners both golden oldies and the more contemporary melodies. Sangeet ka Saffar is broadcast twice a month (90 minutes in length)
Listeners’ Choice Here listeners are given the opportunity to call in and request the melodies they wish to listen to, while also conveying their birthday or other messages to friends and loved ones. A unique element of this programme is that all the music featured is locally produced (i.e. South African), thus community talent is showcased. Many of the artists also feature on the programme regularly and at times even launch their new releases on Listeners’ Choice. Listeners’ Choice is broadcast twice a month and as required (180 minutes)
Musical Treasure Chest Directed at the discerning listener, this programme features classical music from the Indo-Pak subcontinent. Often, musicians are also featured, performing live in-studio. Musical Treasure Chest is broadcast once a month (90 minutes)
Mehfil-e-Qawwali With its special meaning among those who understand Urdu, Mehfil-e-Qawwali gives listeners the chance to enjoy this devotional form of music. Listeners regularly participate in the programme, presenting their collection of music or contributing rare clips to the show. Mehfil-Qawwali is broadcast once a month (90 minutes)
MISCELLANEOUS Labour Law for All As the new labour laws unfold, listeners are being kept up to date by Radio 786 about them. This programme aims to popularize South Africa’s new labour laws and to educate both workers and employers about the Labour Relations Act. The programme has a strong human rights focus ensuring that workers are informed of their rights in the work place. Listeners are also encouraged to read labour law gazettes and publications. The important aspect of this programme is the phone-in session during which the resident labour expert responds to listeners calls about their labour rights and benefits. This programme has set a standard of its own. It attracts a very wide audience as it is informative, educative and addresses the very real problems of people covering such issues as UIF, Rights of Casual Workers, Sick Leave Benefits, Rights of Domestic and Farm Workers, Workers’ Compensation, etc. Labour Law for All is broadcast every Monday (60 minutes in length)
Workers’ World Workers’ World is an extension of Labour Law for All and is produced by an external body, Workers World Productions, in consultation with Radio 786. The programme complements Labour Law for All by providing background information on labour laws and speaking to the people affected by these laws. The producers of the programme are affiliated to workers unions and thus have an excellent understanding of the issues. Workers’ World is broadcast every Tuesday and Wednesday (60 minutes in length)
Tele-job Line This is a phone-in programme directed at those who are seeking employment. Listeners can either phone-in or write to Radio 786 - these letters/faxes/notices are read over the air. Businesses, organisations and people who offer employment also participate in the programme - they inform listeners of any jobs/vacancies they have available. Tele-job Line is broadcast Monday to Thursday (60 minutes in length)
Radio 786 Sports Desk The Radio 786 Sports Desk programme is designed to promote sport in the local community. Listeners are informed of current sporting events; results and fixtures as well as team selections. The rules of various sporting codes are discussed to enlighten listeners. Thus far we have covered sports such as archery, rugby, cricket, golf, snooker, billiards, volleyball, chess, karate, dominoes, soccer, swimming, cricket, tennis, weightlifting, table tennis, fencing and various other codes. The programme has also received numerous awards for several years in succession, many a time vying against commercial broadcasters such as E-tv, SABC and P4. Sports Desk is broadcast on Friday and Saturday (60 minutes in length)
Enviro-World Awareness about nature and the environment is the chief aim of this programme. Pollution, conservation and activities of environmental organisations are regularly featured. The format of the programme is varied: interviews, diary of events, environment hints, facts and figures and so forth. Enviro-world is a syndicated programme. Enviro-world is broadcast Sunday (25 minutes in length)
Nature’s Tapestry Making time for the finer things in life, Nature’s Tapestry gives listeners an insight into trends and developments in the world of gardening. Experts offer advice on all aspects of gardening, from the soil to rose pruning, compost-making and fruit-growing. A special emphasis is also placed on water-wise, low-cost gardening. The Nature’s Tapestry team regularly visits listeners’ homes and conducts programmes from their little paradises. Nature’s Tapestry is broadcast on Saturday and Sunday (25 minutes in length)
Specialist/Seasonal Programmes Travel @ Ease It’s not often that people travel, but when they do, it’s important that preparations proceed smoothly. Travel @ Ease offers listeners advice on the most basic arrangements to be attended to before travelling. The programme also consideres issues such as applying for visas, booking plane tickets and making transport and accommodation arrangements.
Hajj: Journey of a Lifetime Broadcast prior to the annual pilgrimage (Hajj), the programme discusses the significance of the places to be visited, whilst giving listeners advice on fulfilling their religious rites. When pilgrims return from the Hajj, they are offered the opportunity to convey their experiences to the listeners at home.
