The Day of the Oppressed - Friday September 3rd 2010

NASA: The Moon is Shrinking

Photographs sent by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter suggest that the moon is decreasing in size by around 200 meters across

May You Have A Blessed Month...

The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress men and wrongly rebel in the earth, for such there will be a painful torment. (42:42)

No act is too small to recognise truth

This is what should be done to stay conscientised:

Make a sincere prayer for the people of Palestine
Proudly carry the Palestinian flag
Wear the Palestinian Hijab (Black Thobe) with pride
Print and distribute appropriate bumper stickers

Two of South Africa's largest state workers s; NEHAWU and SADTU, have  rejected  the  new wage offer made by government, at the same time deciding to suspend the one-day solidarity strike which was scheduled for today.
Government offered state workers, including teachers, nurses, customs officials and office clerks, an increase of 7.5 percent and R800 per month for housing, against the demands of 8.6 percent and 1 000 rands by the labour groups.
And while the COSATU federation sees the postponement of the strike as biding time for  state workers to consider the new wage offer, the move is also seen as relieving some of the pressure from President Jacob Zuma, to reach an agreement in the negotiation; or risk the possibility of a massive public sector strike, with major consequences for the South African economy.

The strike, already into its third week, bodes concern for the disruption of  essential services in the health, education and other sectors of the economy.

In what may come as a surprise shift to some, the Public Services Association, the PSA, has, in their latest draft resolution,  agreed to the employer’s proposed increase in wages and medical aid subsidy and decided to return to work.

"There is none amongst the believers who plants a tree, or sows a seed, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats thereof, but it is regarded as having given a charitable gift [for which there is great recompense]." [Al-Bukhari, III:513].

Arbor Day originated in 1872 in the United States territory of Nebraska. Mr. J. Sterling Morton, a newcomer to the treeless plains of Nebraska, was a keen proponent of the beauty and benefit of trees. He persuaded the local agricultural board to set aside a day for planting trees and through his position as editor of Nebraska's first newspaper, encouraged participation in the event by publishing articles on the value of trees for soil protection, fruit, shade and building.

Love of the world is a disease that we wean ourselves of during Ramadan, for we voluntarily deprive ourselves of the pleasures of food, drink, and sexual intimacy. Love of praise is likewise struck down because Ramadan is a time in which we examine our short-comings and build resolve and momentum to rectify them.

By Your gracious Will is my fate arranged,
And what You ordain, would not be changed.
Grant me Oh Allah, the sanctity,
To accept that which is my destiny.
But if there be of my life, which I may redefine,
Grant me first the wisdom that I may define
That what I change remains true to You
Then give me the courage to see it through

The Masjidur Raghmaan Jamaa is a leader in providing Islamic education, youth activities counselling and welfare in Hanover Park. We have a well-established reputation for our community projects amongst the Muslim community at large.

In his poem, Imam Mawlud went through many of the diseases of the heart. He spoke first about miserliness (bukhl). And what bet-ter time than Ramadan to shed this malady! It is well known that the Prophet was the most generous of people, and in Ramadan he was even more generous. His Companions described him as a wind that bears gifts. Then there is batar, being gleeful and overjoyed with the fleeting things of this world. The person who fasts during Ramadan experiences an ever-greater joy, one related to this world (the happiness of breaking the fast at dusk) and one related to the Hereafter (the ultimate joy of meeting God and receiving lasting bliss of Paradise). We know from sound tradition that God keeps secret the great reward that awaits those who dutifully fast and do so with excellence. There is great disparity between joy in material things and joy in the everlasting acts that survive one's death and accompany them in the next life.
By today's count, 1,600 have died, more than 263,000 homes have been destroyed and at least 4 million are affected by a disaster that, in terms of hardship and damage, threatens to overshadow the impact and hardship of the 2005 earthquake. In terms of infrastructure, roads and bridges, 50 years of investment and progress has been wiped out overnight. For countless communities, livelihood opportunities - including vital access to basic services (hospitals, schools) and markets - will be severely hampered for months if not years to come.

An area the size of England has been devasted by flood waters, yet the international community has been slow to assist

They, the unbelievers, summon to the fire, while Allah summons to heaven and to the achievement of forgiveness by His entitlement; and he makes clear His signs to Humanity, so that they might bear in mind (2; 221)

There has never been a secular system, past or present, that has matched this compassion for husband and wife relations, Women in particular, who have been mistreated by almost all man made power structures, governments, and administrations throughout the ages, may appreciate the rights to which they are entitled because they are God –given rights.
It has been 16 years into our South African Democracy and Muslims are still waiting for their marriages to be recognised by government. In what appeared to be a breakthrough in this regard, The Muslim Marriages Bill (MMB) was designed in 1999 to act as a legal structure for the recognition of Muslim marriages. The IUC, opposing the Bill, in the year 2000, put forward a proposal for Muslim Personal Law to be recognised by the State, on the basis that it conformed to the Shariah. This implied that Muslim courts, which are staffed by qualified Muslim personnel, able to apply the Shariah, had to serve The MPL. Despite many years of discourse since, the Muslim community has become more divided than ever before on the issue. This series aims to provide information and clarity on the subject as well as related issues.

2010/1431 Ramadaan Appeal To Support Abused Women With Young Children

In our society, women of all ages, cultures, occupations, race and status are abandoned, abused and/or battered. Our mission is to help all women affected by domestic violence and who seek sanctuary, by providing a caring, clean, decent and safe environment.
We respect the courage, dignity and honour of our residents, but require your assistance and support to sustain our efforts
Islamic Resource Foundation of South Africa - IRFSA

The blessed month of Ramadaan provides us with the opportunity to give willingly to those in need. If you can afford it, spare a thought... and a donation to the many institutions who require assistance as well as  those individuals  who have little or nothing to spare.
