The Church of England has decided to disinvest from the controversial miner Vedanta Resources after it established that the mining company did not show enough respect for human rights and local communities, and this was inconsistent with the Church’s ethical investment policy. Lobby group Survival International’s director Stephen Corry said they welcome the decision which sends a strong signal to companies that trample on tribal peoples’ rights, The organization urges anyone with shares in the mining company to sell them if they care about human rights.

Meanwhile…

The organization has appealed to the producer of the movie Avatar to assist the Dongria Kondh tribe in India, whose story is uncannily similar to that of the Na'vi in the movie. The natural inhabitants of the Indian mountains are struggling to defend their land against the Vedanta mining company whom they say are hell bent on destroying their sacred mountain. The company is involved in mining and refining bauxite or aluminium ore. The Dongria and other local Kondh people are determined to save the land from becoming an industrial wasteland.
