Toxic mercury sludge has been sitting in huge government dumping pits outside Durban for the past 20 years - unfenced, uncovered and with no protective lining to stop the poison seeping into the earth.

Cattle graze freely on the grass and other vegetation at the abandoned waste pits in Hammarsdale, but now questions have been raised as to whether brain-damaging mercury has seeped into the groundwater and nearby streams.

The South African Medical Research Council (MRC) has done research on the effects of mercury poisoning.

There have now been calls for swift action to assess potential threats and to clean up the Hammarsdale site.
