School children have been the major casualties of industrial action over the past five years. This is according to data in the Tokiso Review, which is a study of the state of labour dispute resolution in South Africa. The study found that teacher union, Sadtu was responsible for 42% of all working days lost in the five-year period. Sadtu general secretary Mugwena Maluleke dismissed the findings as inaccurate and added that teachers had ways of recovering lost time, including teaching during holidays. Teacher unions have held several protests over the years to highlight the poor conditions under which they have to teach. |
